Erkelenz-Hetzerath - On Thursday (January 16), an elderly woman received a call at around 1 pm. When she answered the call, she heard a female person crying. Immediately afterwards, a male stranger took over the conversation. He pretended to be a police officer and reported an alleged traffic accident in which the woman's granddaughter was involved and in which two people had died.
The caller demanded a mid-five-figure sum of cash as a deposit. As the senior citizen was unable to come up with the large sum of money, the caller also demanded jewelry.
At around 3.30 p.m., another unknown male person, whom the alleged police officer had announced, appeared at the woman's home address and took the cash and jewelry.
The person collecting the money was around 170 centimetres tall, around 30 to 35 years old and dark-skinned. He spoke German without an accent, had a moustache and was dressed in dark clothing. He also wore a black cap and carried a gray shoulder bag.
The police are now looking for witnesses who observed the man described or a suspicious vehicle in the area of Hatzurodestraße and Peter-Holzmann-Straße at the time of the pick-up in question.
