A man from Selfkant was called on August 13 (Tuesday) by an alleged employee of the internet booking platform Booking.com. During the call, the employee tried to obtain the man's bank details. However, the caller reacted in an exemplary manner and did not hand over any account details to unauthorized persons.
Attempts at fraud with a similar approach have been reported several times in recent weeks. It is important to know that the fraudsters use a so-called sub-domain that looks similar to the actual address, but has nothing to do with the provider itself.
To avoid becoming a victim of such a scam, the police advise:
- If you receive a message after booking accommodation via a booking platform stating that you need to enter your payment details again, be suspicious.
- If in doubt, call the accommodation directly to clarify any questions.
- If possible, arrange payment at the accommodation itself when making a booking.
- Booking platforms generally do not require sensitive information such as credit card details or bank details from customers.
- If you do fall for a scam and have entered credit card details on other people's websites, contact your bank immediately. It may be possible to recover money that has been debited.
- Block the credit card and report it to the police.
