A strong smell of alcohol could be detected from the vehicle interior during the check. The driver, a 49-year-old man from Romania, was apparently under the influence of alcohol. Witnesses stated that he was driving his car from Hottorf in the direction of Lövenich, driving his red Toyota car in clear serpentine lines and sometimes driving into the grass verge. He almost touched a warning bar before the village of Lövenich and was able to steer against it at the last moment. In the area of a solid line on the road between Hottorf and Lövenich, he drove completely into the lane of oncoming traffic. An oncoming vehicle had to swerve to avoid a collision. The man was taken to the police station to have a blood sample taken. As he resisted, the officers had to use direct force, causing one officer to injure himself. After he refused to pay a security deposit, he was taken into custody to secure the proceedings.
